How the gas cost calculator works

Enter how far you plan to drive, how many miles per gallon your vehicle gets and the current price of gas. The calculator shows how many gallons you need, the total fuel cost and the cost per mile.

The formula

Gallons needed = distance ÷ miles per gallon. Trip cost = gallons needed × price per gallon.

Example

A 300 mile trip in a car that gets 28 mpg needs about 10.7 gallons. At $3.50 a gallon the trip costs about $37.50, or roughly 12.5 cents per mile.

Tips

Real mileage drops with high speeds, heavy loads and city traffic, so use your highway mpg for long trips. Keep tires properly inflated to save fuel.
